The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country's economic, social and research‑based growth.

The objective of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is to:

We seek dynamic, top-tier postdoctoral candidates, nationally and internationally, to develop their leadership potential and to position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow, positively contributing to Canada’s economic, social and research-based growth through a research-intensive career.

RRU seeks expressions of interest specific to the following research areas:

  • Working with Dr. Brian Belcher, Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Sustainability Research Effectiveness, the post-doc will focus on research to assess the effectiveness and the impact of transdisciplinary research for improved livelihoods, community resilience, and environmental sustainability. S/he will develop and apply improved methods for evaluating transdisciplinary research in comparative analyses of relevant research projects.  The post-doc will contribute to the CRC’s program to: 1) develop an international network of collaborators with a focus on impact and effectiveness in sustainability research; 2) develop and test evaluation approaches and methods for transdisciplinary research, building on emerging ideas and theoretical and practical experience in related fields; 3) analyze and evaluate selected livelihoods, community resilience, and sustainability research projects/programs; and 4) recommend improved approaches and methods for transdisciplinary research evaluation and impact assessment.

 

  • Working with Dr. George Veletsianos, Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Innovative Learning and Technology, the post-doc will focus on emerging technologies and innovations in online education, and in particular open education, open/digital scholarship, and social media/networks.  The experiences and practices of learners, instructors, and scholars with emerging forms of online participation (e.g., MOOCs, social media) are ill-understood and ill-researched.  The objective of a Banting post-doc within this research program will be to make sense of participants' experiences and practices with open online education and social media/networks in higher education and to understand why individuals use these emerging innovations in the ways that they do.  Research questions may include, but are not limited to:  What is the nature of open online learning, teaching, and participation?  What does the experience of open online learning/teaching and/or social network learning consist of?  What is the lived experience of open scholars?  How is technology changing scholarship?  How do scholars perceive and construct their identity using social media/networks?  How do individuals use social media/networks to cope with the expectations of their academic roles (e.g., being a doctoral student, being a newly-hired faculty member, etc)?

 

  • Working with Professor and Disaster and Emergency Management Program Head, Dr. Robin Cox, the post-doc will have the opportunity to work on multiple research projects focused on the disaster recovery and resilience and the psychosocial implications of disasters for individual well-being and public health.  Dr. Cox's research employs creative and participatory strategies to explore the psychosocial effects of disasters on communities with a specific emphasis on rural environments, children and youth, and community- and youth-centred approaches to recovery.  Projects include the Youth Creating Disaster Recovery project (funded through Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council), with field research in Joplin, Missouri and Slave Lake, Alberta; Understanding community resilience to natural disasters to enhance their adaptive capacity (funded through Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council) with field research in post-flood 2013 communities in Alberta; and participation with an international team of researchers working on the Empowering Young People as Citizens (EYPC) project – a partnership between RRU, the International Institute for Child Rights and Development (IICRD), and 20+ co-applicants, collaborators, and partners.  A successful candidate may also have opportunities to teach in the Masters of Disaster and Emergency Management program depending on credentials and experience.

 

  • Working with Dr. Bernard Schissel, Professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, the post-doc would be a member of the team working on the Empowering Young People as Citizens (EYPC) project – a partnership between RRU, the International Institute for Child Rights and Development (IICRD), and 20+ co-applicants, collaborators, and partners. Project objectives are to: 1) provide evidence-based contextualized child and youth-centered research, training, and mentorship for children and youth, academia, civil society, and practitioners; 2) use child-centered approaches that enable the lived realities of children, youth, and communities to inform research, policy, training, and practice; 3) build interdisciplinary knowledge and tools that focus on effective and democratic systems and practices supporting and protecting children and youth rights; 4) increase the multi-directional mobilization of knowledge among researchers and non-academic audiences (including young people); 5) support new collaborative approaches and innovative research networks to address the challenges facing children and youth today; 6) use research to inform the capacity development of university faculty and students, professionals, government practitioners and policy makers, and children and youth; and 7) inform laws and policies, compliant with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and other international standards and practices.  The research agenda focuses on four key systems in which rights, well-being and protection of children and youth may be in jeopardy or absent: governance; justice; post-conflict transitions; and disaster recovery. Initial case study research will focus in Thailand, Colombia, Uganda, and Aboriginal communities in Canada.

 

  • Working with Dr. Phillip Vannini, Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Innovative Learning and Public Ethnography, the post-doc will focus on the multiple ways in which ethnographic research can reach out multiple publics, especially non-academic audiences. Combining traditional methodologies and innovative (both old and new media-based) means and genres of knowledge mobilization the post-doctoral fellowship would develop the methodological agenda of public ethnography and qualitative research popularization.

 

  • Working with Dr. Eileen Piggot-Irvine, Professor of Leadership in the School of Leadership Studies and Adjunct Professor Griffith University and Unitec, the post-doc will focus on evaluating the process, outputs, outcomes and impact of action research as part of an international research team.  Action research has been significantly under-evaluated to date so this study is planned to address this gap and also to provide much needed evidence of effectiveness of action research.  The Evaluative Study of Action Research (ESAR) is planned as large-scale research across approximately 15 countries and over 120 action research projects.  The mixed method research design of the study will include survey, interview, focus group and world café methods, and in-depth case studies.  The experiences and practices of action researchers and those impacted by action research projects will be considered alongside extensive documentary analysis.  In keeping with the collaborative underpinning of action research, a goal of the study is to widely mobilize the findings throughout the action research community.  The objective of a Banting post-doc within this ESAR research study will be to work intimately and equally with the research team.

 

  • Working with Dr. Ron Lindstrom, Professor and Director of the Centre for Health Leadership and Research (CHLR), the post-doc will actively contribute to leadership research and knowledge mobilization toward increasing the capacity of health leadership from local to international levels.

 

         The goals of CHLR include:

 

  • Continuously develop and implement an applied research agenda in health systems leadership to inform scholarly practice and policy;
  • Create and engage in internal/external partnerships and networks to support and advance health systems leadership, applied research activities and knowledge mobilization strategies;
  • Conduct applied health leadership research and coordinate activities with internal/external stakeholders and partners to address emergent needs in academic and practice settings;
  • Organize/co-organize conferences, symposia, summits and think-tanks in emerging areas of scholarship and practice

To achieve these goals, and through the efforts of a growing cadre of doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows, CHLR is developing and expanding health leadership and research expertise in  a number of areas that cross disciplines and knowledge domains.  These include, for example: participatory action research, network science, transdisciplinarity, complexity science, phronetic leadership research, and knowledge translation and mobilization.
