The Advisor meets with students, assesses documentation, coordinates accommodations, acquires technology, recommends actions to increase the application of Universal Design for Learning principles and reduce physical barriers to access. The Advisor has a working knowledge of Financial Aid & Awards services and provides administrative support to the awards program and other tasks as needed. The incumbent works collaboratively with program areas and other services as part of the Student Success Team to develop standard and consistent policies and processes for responding to disability barrier-related concerns in all areas of campus life; and, acts as an information resource of emerging practices related to promoting and enhancing accessibility in all areas at Royal Roads University. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or diploma in a disability-related field of study plus a minimum 2 years administrative experience, or five (5) years of work experience in the post-secondary setting. Training specific to delivering services to students with a disability is an asset.Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; proven ability working effectively in a team, with students, faculty, staff and senior administrators, as well as other constituents from diverse cultural, professional, and disability-related backgrounds in a broad range of programs.Share the institutional values of being accountable, caring, and creativeDetail-oriented, with the ability to interpret and apply complex policies and guidelines; effective problem-solving and respectful negotiating skills. Superb organizational and time management skills; competent self-starter, able to work in a dynamic, evolving environment.Solid understanding of the legal issues pertaining to the rights of persons with disabilities under Canadian and provincial Human Rights legislation, and confidentiality laws.Ability to work in partnership to plan, coordinate, and present at faculty-specific workshops related to the creation and maintenance of inclusive classroom and online and teaching strategies.Advanced computer skills (including MS Office Suite, Blackboard Collaborate, and social media).Interest or aptitude for learning how to interpret psychometric, psychiatric, and medical documentation and recommend appropriate accommodation.Interest or aptitude for learning assistive technology and its appropriate application in accommodations for a broad range of persons with disabilities.Knowledge and understanding of the issues affecting persons with disabilities, knowledge of a broad range of disabilities and the subsequent implications for students pursuing an academic program is an asset.Sound knowledge of RRU, its philosophy and programs is an asset.
