Royal Roads University is seeking applications from eligible candidates for an Associate Faculty contract position to develop and teach an online course – INDS 505: Academic Writing and Critical Thinking Across Disciplines- in the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies program in the College of Interdisciplinary Studies. As independent contractors, Associate Faculty members are not RRU employees. Rather, they hold short-term contracts to develop and/or teach individual courses in our programs.

The Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies admits approximately 80 students annually, who undertake an interdisciplinary suite of courses from a wide variety of Royal Roads University programs.

The program currently has 2 required courses:

  • INDS 500: Theory in Interdisciplinary Studies
  • INDS 510 Social Science Research Methods

These courses offer students a broad foundation in social science theory and research methods at a post-graduate level.

To complement this, the successful applicant will help to develop a new elective:

  • INDS 505: Academic Writing and Critical Thinking Across Disciplines

This new course is intended to introduce students to the practice of critically reading academic articles, formulating a logical academic argument, and effective academic writing.

The RRU Learning and Teaching Model guides course development and pedagogical approaches, and the College of Interdisciplinary Studies strives to develop students competencies in the areas of:

  • Communication
  • Critical thinking
  • Global Perspectives and citizenship
  • Working with others
  • Working with multiple bodies of knowledge

We have an immediate need for a course designer and instructor for our 8-week INDS 505 : Academic Writing and Critical Thinking Across Disciplines course, which runs from June 19 – Aug 20, 2017.

Expectations for new instructors/course developers

All new RRU instructors are expected to participate in the “Orientation to Teaching and Course Design” Moodle site as well as the professional development opportunities regularly offered through RRU’s Centre for Teaching and Educational Technologies (CTET), including such courses as “Facilitating Online Learning,” “Moodle Skills Workshop,” “Instructional Skills Workshop,” and “Blackboard Collaborate Training.” More information is available here:


The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in English, writing, fine arts (creative writing) rhetoric, composition, literature or a related field
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence in writing instruction at the graduate level
  • Experience in designing and delivering online graduate courses
  • Ability to develop and teach an interdisciplinary, learning outcomes-based curriculum
  • Experience in tutoring or coaching adult learners in academic writing
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially as a team member
  • Commitment to student-centred, learning-oriented teaching
