Royal Roads University is seeking applications from eligible candidates for Associate Faculty contract positions to teach in the Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Management (MAELM) program for the School of Education and Technology. As independent contractors, Associate Faculty members are not RRU employees. Rather, they hold short-term contracts to teach individual courses in our programs.

The MAELM program is a two-year degree dedicated to educating K-12 leaders across Canada and around the world. The program is delivered through a cohort-based, collaborative learning model supported by current learning technologies. Students are required to actively contribute to the learning of their peers, and there are team-based assessed activities in most courses. The program is offered in a two-year blended format that includes one two-week residency, and online study; the residency takes place in July. All courses are 3-credit offerings, with the exception of the Research Paper (6 credits). The program admits approximately 30 students annually.

This program is focused on theoretical and applied approaches to the understanding and practice of leadership in personal, supervisory, team, and strategic contexts in multiple sectors, i.e., the business, non-profit, and public sectors, including military, education, health, and the arts, among others. It stresses a holistic, transdisciplinary, approach to learning leadership. Ideal Associate Faculty candidates are scholar-practitioners who bring informed professional practice, research, and academic scholarship to the program.

The MAELM program runs once per year. Each program includes:

  • Three blended residency courses (EDLM 501, EDLM 510 and EDLM 525); and
  • Seven online courses (EDLM 530, EDLM 540, EDLM 550, EDLM 560, EDLM 570, EDLM 580 and EDLM 610).

Expectations for new Associate Faculty

Please note that priority in teaching assignments is given to associate faculty who have previous experience teaching a course. However, we are currently seeking to expand our pool of instructors available to teach in MAHEAL.

All contracted associate faculty are required to complete the self-directed Tri-Council Ethics Tutorial (TCPS 2: CORE TUORIAL: and submit their Certificate of Completion prior to their first contract with the School. All new RRU associate faculty are expected to familiarize themselves with the resources available on the New Faculty Orientation site (, as well as engage in the professional development opportunities regularly offered through RRU’s Centre for Teaching and Educational Technologies (CTET), including such courses as “Facilitating Learning Online”, “Moodle Skills Workshop,” “Instructional Skills Workshop,” and “Blackboard Collaborate Moderator Training.” More information is available at the following link:

The ideal candidate for teaching at RRU is someone who has experience as a scholar and a practitioner. For our programs, desired qualifications include the following.

For online courses, associate faculty will ideally possess:

  • A minimum of a doctoral degree, ideally in Education or a related field;
  • Current and ongoing field experience in Leadership in the K-12 sector;Demonstrated teaching excellence at the graduate level in online environments, in the field of K-12 education or a related discipline;
  • Professional/applied leadership experience and expertise that aligns with the focus of one or more of our graduate courses;
  • Experience in and understanding of educational leadership and organizational change; Experience in designing and delivering online courses;
  • Experience in facilitating and evaluating learning outcomes-based activities;
  • Ability to work within a transdisciplinary, learning outcomes-based curriculum;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially as a team member with a variety of teams and stakeholder groups;
  • Commitment to student-centred, learning-oriented teaching;
  • Flexibility and adaptability, particularly in the face of ongoing program and curricular changes;
  • Experience and knowledge with multiple versions of Microsoft Word;
  • Familiarity with the current version of APA and has access to APA manual. Knowledge of how to access the RRU Writing Centre ( for support;
  • Is able to use Skype or an equivalent platform (preferably with video) for regular student meetings, in addition to (or instead of) making telephone call meetings; and,
  • A teaching philosophy that is compatible with RRU’S Learning and Teaching Model, available at:

In addition to the above criteria, residency instructors will ideally possess:

  • Experience in the integration and use of experiential, adult learning principles in curriculum design, delivery, and assessment; and,
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence at the graduate level in face-to-face environments, in the field of K-12 education or a related discipline.
