Royal Roads University is seeking applications from eligible candidates for an Associate Faculty contract position to teach WRIT111: Academic Writing in the International Year One program in the College of Interdisciplinary Studies. As independent contractors, Associate Faculty members are not RRU employees. Rather, they hold short-term contracts to develop and/or teach individual courses in our programs.

The International Year One program annually admits approximately 50 international students who undertake an interdisciplinary, full-time, on-campus, suite of courses that encompass theoretical and historical frameworks relating to global citizenship. The program presents learners with foundational skills and knowledge that will support their participation in more specialized courses that they will pursue as part of their RRU undergraduate program. Support for strengthening English language in all domains (writing, speaking, reading comprehension and listening) as well as critical thinking, communication and teamwork competencies is purposefully and strategically integrated into coursework, assessment, and activities.

The International Year One program consists of the following academic courses:

  • HUMN 103: Foundations of Global Citizenship (9 credits)

  • HUMN 104: Social, Economic, and Environmental Sustainability (3 credits)

  • WRIT 110: Writing for Success (3 credits)

  • CDNS 101: Canadian Studies (3 credits)

  • WRIT 111: Academic Writing (3 credits)

  • IHMN 201: The Business of Tourism or BUSA 201: Introduction to Business Administration (3 credits)

  • CESL 100: Civic Engagement and Service Learning (3 credits)

The RRU Learning and Teaching Model guide course development and pedagogical approaches, and the College of Interdisciplinary Studies strive to develop students’ competencies in the areas of:

  • Communication

  • Critical thinking

  • Global Perspectives and citizenship

  • Working with others

  • Working with multiple bodies of knowledge

We have an immediate need for an instructor for our 12-weekWRIT111: Academic Writing, which runs from April 16 to July 6, 2018.

This course teaches students to effectively and clearly present ideas and arguments in writing. The course focuses on development of critical reasoning skills and on methods and strategies for writing in the social and applied sciences.

Qualifications: 

Expectations for new instructors

All new RRU instructors are expected to participate in the “Orientation to Teaching and Course Design” Moodle site as well as the professional development opportunities regularly offered through RRU’s Centre for Teaching and Educational Technologies (CTET), including such courses as “Facilitating Online Learning,” “Moodle Skills Workshop,” “Instructional Skills Workshop,” and “Blackboard Collaborate Training.” More information is available here: http://ctet.royalroads.ca/workshops-and-events

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in English or a related field

  • Demonstrated teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, in the field of academic writing or a related discipline

  • Experience in designing and delivering undergraduate courses

  • Experience in facilitating and evaluating practice-based learning outcomes

  • Ability to develop and teach an interdisciplinary, learning outcomes-based curriculum

  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially as a team member

  • Commitment to student-centred, learning-oriented teaching

  • Flexibility and adaptability, particularly in the face of ongoing program and curricular changes

  • A teaching philosophy that is compatible with RRU’S Learning and Teaching Model, available at:http://www.royalroads.ca/about/learning-and-teaching-model 

In addition to the above criteria, the candidate will ideally possess:

  • Intercultural communication competencies

  • Experience teaching international students and students with English as an additional language
