Royal Roads University (RRU) is situated on a National Historic Site just minutes from downtown Victoria, British Columbia surrounded by old growth forest and awe inspiring ocean and mountain views.  RRU is a special-purpose university that delivers high-quality applied and professional programs.  Established by the provincial government in 1995 through the Royal Roads University Act, RRU was created with a unique mandate and governance structure to respond to the labour market needs of British Columbia. While only 21 years old, RRU has over 20,000 alumni in 65 countries. With a reputation for innovation, RRU is a leader in the delivery of blended learning programs, which combine intensive residency experiences with online course work.

We are seeking a senior human resources professional with a rich and diverse background gained within a variety of industries who is inspired by our mission and committed to making a difference by serving as an integral member of the University’s senior management team. 

The University’s executive team works in close alignment to determine and deliver Royal Roads’ strategic objectives.  Working with the executive team and reporting directly to the Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer whose responsibilities include the strategic integration and coordination of the University’s resources (financial, human and infrastructure), you will provide senior level advice and direction on all human resources matters that shape the experience and engagement of our diverse communities of interest.  These include our more than 450 on-campus employees (union and non) and several hundred Associate Faculty members (contract hires). A key function of the role will be to lead and inspire the Human Resources team and oversee the full breadth of human resources functions and services offered at Royal Roads University.  

Through a combination of sound business acumen and intuitive sensitivity you will understand and appreciate the complexities of our operation and will provide strategic advice that recognizes an integrated approach of both human and business resources to achieve our organizational goals.

Our ideal candidate will possess an optimal combination of the following:

  • Master’s degree combined with 10- 15 years’ experience in progressively senior leadership roles ideally gained in complex environments that include a mix of unionized and non-unionized employee groups
  • Exemplary skills in analytical reasoning and capacity to develop recommendations that will inform and enable executive decision-making
  • Strong business acumen and demonstrated exceptional judgment, discretion and professional courtesy
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills (both written and verbal)
  • Exceptional organizational skills to manage complex and diverse responsibilities and competing priorities in a dynamic work environment
  • Experience as a leader in business transformation and change management initiatives
  • Ability to adapt, negotiate, and prioritize
  • Experience in labour relations with detailed knowledge of labour laws
  • Capacity to develop and nurture a broad range of relationships (with both internal and external stakeholders)
  • As an ambassador for Royal Roads University, demonstrated commitment to excellence and professionalism
  • Technologically savvy, with an aptitude for application of computer skills
  • Recent experience negotiating a collective agreement in a public-sector environment
  • CHRP designation
  • Project management experience

This is a regular full-time position working 37.5 hours per week. The role is positioned within Grade 7 and the recruitment salary range begins at $104,539.00 per annum.  The University is pleased to offer a comprehensive benefits package.
