Under the strategic direction of the Vice-President, Communications and Advancement, the Communications Assistant contributes to the work of Royal Roads University communications to strengthen the university’s reputation and relationships with local, regional and national audiences. The communications department provides a centre for communications initiatives and services, including university communications, internal communications, news services, media relations and editorial services.

Under the supervision of the Senior Communications Manager, the Communications Assistant supports communications activities in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The Communications Assistant moderates the university’s staff news platform and provides support for the user community, coordinates and distributes staff news blasts, maintains web pages, contributes to media monitoring and reporting, proofreads content, edits photos and coordinates analytics. The Assistant also provides support for events, maintains files and performs data entry among other administrative duties.


To be well suited to the role you will possess the following qualifications and competencies:

  • Post-secondary certificate or diploma in media and/or public relations with a minimum of one year of office administration experience. A combination of related education and work experience may be considered.
  • Strong digital skills and content management system experience
  • Proficiency with Photoshop, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Solid writing skills are required and proofreading experience is an asset.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to work to deadline
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities
  • Strong interpersonal, collaborative and verbal communications skills
  • Sound judgement, developed decision-making skills and the ability to deal sensitively with critical issues

This is a regular, full-time position, working 37.5 hours per week. The position has been evaluated at Grade 2 and the recruitment range starts at $38,120 per annum.
