Under the strategic direction of the Vice-President Communications and Advancement, the communications officer contributes to the work of Royal Roads University Communications to strengthen the university’s reputation and relationships with local, regional and national audiences. The communications department provides a centre for communications initiatives and services, including university communications, internal communications, news services, media relations and editorial services. Under the supervision of the senior communications manager, the communications officer creates and delivers communications collateral and activities across all areas of focus to support the university’s strategic priorities. The communications officer plans and executes strategic university initiatives by providing communications or special project support to the university’s executive, programs and departments (e.g., speaking notes, emergency communications, issues management, publications and event communications). The communications officer works closely with team members in a collaborative, fast-paced environment to write and pitch news stories and features, copy edit and proofread content, monitor social media and traditional media and post content to the university’s website, among other duties.

  • A degree in communication or journalism and five years related work experience is preferred. A two-year certificate in communication, journalism or public relations with commensurate experience may be considered.
  • Advanced writing and editing skills with experience writing feature articles, news releases and related communications materials
  • Demonstrated experience across all communications channels and platforms, including social media
  • Media relations and/or issues management skills and experience is considered an asset.
  • Good organizational, project management and time management skills with the ability to work to deadline
  • Independent initiative, sound judgement and developed decision-making abilities
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communications skills, including the ability to deal sensitively with critical issues

This is a regular, full-time position, working 37.5 hours per week. The position has been evaluated at Grade 4 and the recruitment range starts at $53,768 per annum.
