Job description: 

Reporting to the Director of Student Services, the Counsellor provides one-on-one and group counselling support to students on-campus and those studying remotely.

The Counsellor oversees and provides intake assessments, threat assessments, coordinates referrals, schedules appointments, offers culturally sensitive individual counselling, and responds to urgent situations as required. The Counsellor provides counselling interventions to online and on-campus students facing a variety of academic, emotional, developmental and personal challenges.

The Counsellor also implements and supports wellness activities and facilitates workshops for students, staff and faculty on topics related to mental health, wellness and academic success.

Working closely with Accessibility Services, and other units within Student Services, the Counsellor participates in the university’s emergency on-call system for student incidents or crisis, and contributes to departmental student success initiatives and student retention.


To be well suited to the role you will possess the following qualifications and competencies:

  • M.A. (Counselling Psychology), M.Ed.(Counselling) or M.S.W. (Masters of Social Work), and a minimum of five years’ experience in a post-secondary setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (Registration with BCACC or CCPA is an asset).
  • Experience in the delivery of one-on-one and group counselling and the demonstrated ability to identify students at risk, and support students (both on-campus and from a distance), with mental health concerns.
  • Training in the administration, scoring and interpretation of psychological tests and inventories.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff, both online and face-to-face.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to deal sensitively with situations that require a high level of diplomacy, tact, and sound judgment.
  • Proven commitment to ongoing learning and skill development and to staying abreast of trends in student academic support.
  • Demonstrated experience with student service initiation and delivery in a post-secondary environment; strong understanding of student development theory is an asset.
  • Demonstrated intercultural competence, cultural diversity training experience.
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, and oversees 1-3 contracted counsellors.
  • Ability to offer counselling services in online, telephone and face-to-face environments (familiarity with Blackboard Collaborate and video-conferencing an asset).
  • Flexibility to work evenings if required for residencies and urgent issues, and participate in the Student Service’s emergency on-call system approximately one week/month.
  • Sound knowledge of RRU, its philosophy and programs is an asset.

This is a temporary part-time on-campus position working varying morning, afternoon, and occasional evening shifts for a total of 18 hours per week for a term of approximately 13 months.  The position has been evaluated at Grade 4 and the recruitment range begins at $53,768 per annum (which will be pro-rated for part-time).
