Job description: 

Reporting to the Supervisor, Custodial and Housekeeping Services, you will be responsible for providing custodial services for University facilities, including regular cleaning, custodial maintenance and sanitation of common areas of residences, rooms and buildings, cafeteria and gymnasium including the interior building surfaces, fixtures, furnishings and fittings contained within these facilities.  You will provide heavier cleaning and sanitation of resident dorms when not occupied or on request (e.g. floors, walls, fabrics). 

You will maintain a high quality of upkeep and detailing of residence accommodation, lounges, hallways, entranceways and University house. In addition, you will be responsible for the physical appearance and cleanliness of assigned areas, ensuring they are maintained in accordance with applicable department, statutory codes and regulations, and for promoting the professional image presented by the University.


To be well suited to the role you will possess the following required qualifications and competencies:

  • Grade 12 graduation certificate , or equivalent
  • One (1) year experience performing related duties in an institutional environment and completion of a recognized Custodial certificate course, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license in the province of BC
  • Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs 
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks: physically demanding, bending, crouching, kneeling, weight handling
  • Ability to engage in walking, standing, lifting, carrying, and climbing for long periods of time
  • Demonstrated ability to operate machinery needed to perform custodial and maintenance tasks
  • Experience using common hand and power tools needed for routine maintenance
  • Ability to climb ladders and be comfortable working with heights or in confined spaces
  • Ability to handle chemicals and corrosive materials in a safe, efficient and effective manner
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external clients
  • General knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in the work performed

This is a casual on-call position within the CUPE Local 3886 Bargaining Unit and we cannot guarantee a set number of hours per week.  The hourly rate is $18.43 and the university is pleased to offer a percentage of salary in lieu of benefits.
