Under general direction from the Supervisor/Head Gardener, this position performs a wide variety of duties in order to meet the operational requirements of the Gardens & Grounds area.  This role has two main functions; to maintain a wide variety of equipment/tools in good safe working order and to also be part of the garden & grounds service delivery as a gardener approximately 50% of the time.  The successful candidate will not only be responsible to ensure all equipment and tools are in safe working condition, but also are able to demonstrate the proper use of these items. The incumbent is responsible for quality work in a proactive and timely manner and for ensuring that all duties are carried out in accordance with all codes, regulations and internal processes. As this is a service based delivery department it will require someone with a positive solution based attitude to ensure campus support is provided to the highest standard.  Quality and safety are paramount and in order to be sucessful, the right individual would not only find these to be second nature but also of driving interest to achieve. 


To be well suited to the role you will possess the following required qualifications and competencies:

  • Possession of a Diploma in Horticulture and two years' experience, or a combination of a Certificate in Horticulture and at least three years’ experience; and
  • Power Equipment Technician certificate, plus three years recent experience performing duties in a horticultural equipment repair environment or seven years recent experience performing equipment/tool repairs and maintenance. Must have strong mechanical and troubleshooting abilities for small engines;
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license in the province of BC;
  • Knowledge of names and cultural requirements of common garden plants.
  • Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and the use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Heritage landscape or botanical garden experience
  • Basic computer skills and MS Office.
  • Ability to operate equipment related to the duties including the operation of front-end loader, tractors and PTO equipment
  • Ability to train staff in safe operating procedures for all equipment.
  • Ability to take direction and work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing and by email.
  • Ability to work in all types of weather conditions.
  • Able to work cooperatively with others and promote a respectful positive team work environment

This position is regular full-time working 37.5 hours per week.  The successful candidate must have the ability to work a variety of shifts including weekends.  This is a CUPE Local 3886 Bargaining Unit position and the hourly rate is $23.59 and the university is pleased to offer a comprehensive benefits package
