Royal Roads University seeks an energetic Librarian with a high degree of initiative to provide support for Scholarly Communications and Learning.

As a part of the Library team, the Librarian, in close consultation and cooperation with other units as well as other library staff, will support scholarly communication services at the Royal Roads University Library.  

In this role you will also provide library related support for teaching, learning, and research. You will demonstrate initiative in increasing awareness among faculty, researchers, and students of scholarly communication issues and trends in the digital environment, and help in the development of a broad range of services in support of evolving models of scholarly communication, open access initiatives, intellectual property rights, and digital preservation. Furthermore, you will support and promote the institutional repository, assisting with content additions, working with vendors, training other library staff, and assisting in the creation and update of policies, procedures, and other necessary documentation.  As a member of a team serving students and faculty in an active research environment, you will also help teach and assess information literacy classes and programs, provide reference services and appointment-based research consultations in all disciplines, and conduct outreach to faculty and students on a range of library services.  Additional responsibility for other projects or initiatives to advance and support the work of the Library may also be assigned.


To be well suited to this opportunity you will possess the following qualifications and competencies:

  • Graduate degree from a library school accredited by the American Library Association
  • Minimum of two years relevant professional experience in an academic library, that includes direct and significant experience working in the development and support of an institutional repository
  • Demonstrated professionalism and ability to apply creative ideas and strong analysis in the pursuit of institutional goals
  • Initiative, flexibility, and strong intrinsic motivation, with willingness to share expertise, work in teams, and negotiate solutions with diverse groups; ability to effectively balance multiple priorities and tasks, adjust priorities as necessary, and manage time wisely
  • Familiarity with trends in practices for academic library services and a high degree of technological fluency, particularly with those technologies used in distributed learning environments, with an ability to anticipate the influence and risk of disruption and large scale change in both technology and educational administration
  • Aptitude for service oriented work and demonstrated record of ability to work with the public and colleagues in a tactful manner
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication skills; demonstrated ability to prepare and present quality written and oral reports in English
  • Interest in and capacity for conducting research; an established research portfolio is an asset
  • Knowledge of best practices in information literacy programs, reference, and other services for academic libraries, as well as broad knowledge of information sources in a variety of disciplines and an understanding of the publishing industry and both the library’s and university’s role within it

The position also requires an individual who possesses a commitment to service and is able to work effectively in a changing and innovative institutional environment. This is a temporary full-time position working 37.5 hours per week.  The work schedule for this role will be Tuesday to Saturday and including some evening shifts as required. This is a two year, limited term appointment.
