Job description: 

Royal Roads University is seeking a Research Assistant (RA) to contribute to the program of the Canada Research Chair in Sustainability Research Effectiveness. 

The CRC program aims to:

  1. Develop and test evaluation approaches and methods for transdisciplinary research, building on emerging ideas and theoretical and practical experiences in related fields
  2. Analyse and evaluate selected livelihoods, community resilience and sustainability research projects/programs
  3. Recommend improved approaches and methods for transdisciplinary research evaluation and impact assessment
  4. Develop an international network of collaborators with a focus on impact and effectiveness in sustainability research

Working with Dr. Brian Belcher, Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Sustainability Research Effectiveness, you will support the program team to assess the outcomes and the impact of research, especially research that aims to improve livelihoods, community resilience and environmental sustainability. You will: support the development and implementation of methods for evaluating problem-oriented, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research; conduct literature and document reviews; contribute to individual case studies and comparative analyses; contribute to reporting, with opportunities for co-authorship, and; provide support for grant applications, meetings and field research. Upcoming projects include an outcome evaluation of policy-oriented research in Peru and of a multi-case comparative study of the role of wild natural resources in rural livelihoods in the tropics. International travel may be required.

Qualifications: 
  • Master’s degree in a relevant social science field
  • Experience and demonstrated interest in evaluation, especially research evaluation
  • Understanding of Theory of Change development and theory-based evaluation 
  • Good qualitative analytical skills
  • Strong communication and writing skills. Expected outputs include internal and external reports, peer-reviewed journal articles, presentations.

This is a full time or part time (0.6 FTE, 3 days/week), temporary position for 2 years with the possibility of extension depending on funding and performance.  The hourly rate is $22.00 - $27.00 per hour.  The University is pleased to offer a percentage of salary in lieu of vacation.
