Royal Roads University is seeking a dynamic, social-media literate individual in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo to work as a Research Assistant (RA) with Dr. Robin Cox and other members of the Resilience by Design (RbD) Research Innovation Lab team on a research project entitled “Youth Voices Rising: Recovery & Resilience in Wood Buffalo.”

As a Research Assistant your duties will involve a range of research activities that include: helping to manage a social media campaign; engaging and working with youth; event and workshop recruiting, organizing and logistics; publication coordination and dissemination; community outreach and engagement; and data collection.  As part of the RbD Lab research team, you will be working directly with youth and the youth-focused or centred community organizations that support them.

Additional activities will depend on skills and interest, but could include: co-facilitating arts- and process-based workshop activities and storytelling methods (e.g., photo-voice, digital storytelling and participatory video); data-analysis; and/or contributing to research outputs (e.g., web stories, journal articles, research reports, etc.), as well as engaging in ongoing efforts to develop, strengthen, and support current and new relationships between the research team and representatives from various community organizations and others focused on wildfire recovery efforts. You will also be required to participate in research team meetings and support the research activities as an active, dedicated, flexible, community-based member of the research team.

  • Experience with youth engagement
  • Strong communication and writing skills
  • At least one year of a Master’s degree in a relevant social science field preferred

This is a causal, on-call position that would fluctuate between 10-25 hours/week for up to 400 hours between June and Dec 2017; with August through October being the most active time. The position may be extended to 2018 depending on research activities. The hourly rate is $23.00.  The University is pleased to offer a percentage of salary in lieu of vacation.
