U-LEARN: Employee Learning & Development Framework

What is U-Learn?

U-Learn is Royal Roads University’s Employee Learning and Development Framework.  U-Learn is designed to help our RRU Community to continually develop and enhance our individual, management and leadership competencies (skills, knowledge and attributes) and leverage the talent and strength of our most valuable asset – Our Employees. The program takes a blended learning approach including Tuition Assistance and offerings from Linkedin.com, Professional and Continuing Studies, Centre for Teaching and Educational Technologies, internal workshops and forums offered directly through Human Resources, as well as offerings from external agencies such as the Centre for Higher Education Research and Development (CHERD).

U-Learn was designed to leverage the Professional Development strategy developed in response to the 2014 Cultural Values Assessment as well as integrate and reinforce RRU's 14 values based competencies that underpin the University’s Performance and Development Planning.

What does U-Learn include?

The U-Learn program is guided by our ongoing commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and our Healthy-U strategy and our Values Based Competencies.

 U-Begin is our comprehensive on-boarding and orientation program designed to help new employees learn about our University and quickly orient themselves to all that we offer.

 U-Connect is designed to support employees as individual contributors in developing technical and administrative skills and the opportunity to grow core competencies required to advance in the workplace.

 U-Manage is designed to support front line managers who supervise and lead others as well as those who influence the leadership of others at the University.  

 U-Lead is for those in leadership roles including oversight of a service area and those who influence the leadership of the university. 

The RRU Mentorship program - (6 months for 10 participants) will be offered towards the end of fiscal year 2021/22 and will not be tied to any one of our learning streams. The mentorship program will be designed to connect those seeking mentorship (front line staff, faculty, managers, leaders) with their desired/preferred mentor, provide guidance and learning to mentors and mentees to enable and encourage a positive experience for both. The program will include pre-training, monthly group meetings and individual mentor/mentee meetings over the course of six months.

The RRU Way Forums will be introduced in the winter of 2021/2022 to provide those in leadership and management roles at Royal Roads with information to increase understanding of Royal Roads University’s systems and processes. This will include such topics as:

        • Understanding the University Environment
        • Finance Essentials (eg. operating vs capital budgets)
        • HR Basics at RRU
        • Navigating Performance Development Plans
        • Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at RRU
        • Indigenous Cultural Awareness
        • Resilience

Actual topics will be developed in consultation with senior leaders
